In the north-east of Guyana, almost 460 km of coastline defy the Atlantic Ocean. Mangrove forests and brackish water swamps are the habitat of sea turtles, bizarre four-eyed fish or hoatzins, Guyana’s heraldic birds. This is where 90% of Guyanese live in a constant battle against the water and the dangers of the ocean. And yet Caribbean serenity characterises everyday life – with an uncertain future.
